Golf @ Sunningdale: Transforming and Modernizing

The Future of Sunningdale's Golf Course

At Sunningdale, we have an 85 year tradition of great golf, which started with great golf course design. From the beginning in 1934, Stanley Thompson's original vision has guided us on a path of how to best utilize our historic property along the Medway Creek to offer a challenging and modern golfing experience.

Reimagining Sunningdale as a Championship 18-Hole Layout
Over the past 5 years, we have undertaken a revitalization and consolidation project for our two golf courses, which will see the emergence in 2023 of a single new 18-hole golfing experience - the NEW SUNNINGDALE. It borrows heavily from the original Stanley Thompson design and adds 6 new holes by one of Stanley's greatest protégés - Doug Carrick - as well as renovations to all the greens and some tees of the remaining 12 Thompson-designed holes.

The 6 new holes were put in play as of July, 2019. During 2019 to 2022, the 12 existing course holes are being renovated to complete the New Sunningdale Course. Once complete, all former holes will be decommissioned to finalize Sunningdale's conversion to an 18-hole facility.

To soften the impact of the construction and renovation on our membership, we are maintaining several of the current East and West Course holes for the 2019-2022 seasons until the fully renovated NEW SUNNINGDALE is ready for full play.

We look forward to completing this historic change to our property and offering an outstanding Championship Golfing Experience to our members and guests.

December 2020: As the renovation project for the New Sunningdale 18 continues into the spring of 2021, we will utilize the remaining Robinson Course holes (now referred to as the WEST Course) to create a new 2-course rotation to play during 2021 for our members and guests at Sunningdale Golf & Country Club. The West Course will be 18 holes and the newer East Course holes will have 17 holes (until late spring) or 13 holes in play as the rest are undergoing renovation and grow-in.

The earliest we will be converting to a single 18-hole layout would be the start of the 2023 season.

With a nod to our history, we will be referring to the two 2021 layouts as East and West courses.
